Dorina Nowill ficou cega os 17 anos em 1936. Isso não a impediu, muito pelo contrário, a impulsionou a fazer um trabalho precursor na educação e integração da população deficiente visual no Brasil. Foi ela a responsável por trazer a primeira imprensa Braille para o país em 1946, mesmo ano em que criou a Fundação para o Livro do Cego no Brasil ampliando assim as possibilidades de acesso a leitura e educação para os deficientes visuais. Em 1992 a Fundação recebeu seu nome passando a se chamar Fundação Dorina Nowill para Cegos. Além de precursora na criação e gestão de projetos governamentais em âmbito nacional e internacional para inclusão do cego ao sistema educacional e sua posterior integração ao mercado de trabalho, Dorina foi presidente do Conselho Mundial dos Cegos tendo proferido, entre outros, discurso na Assembleia Geral da ONU em 1981, Ano Internacional da Pessoa Deficiente. Dorina Nowill faleceu aos 91 anos em 2010 deixando um vasto legado de benfeitorias e uma nova visão e estrutura para o cego no Brasil e no mundo.
“Dorina – Olhar para o Mundo”, resgata a trajetória desta grande pioneira da educação e inclusão social do deficiente visual no Brasil e no mundo. Sua história revela uma jornada de tomada de consciência e ação transformadora, tanto no âmbito pessoal, como na esfera social e política.
Dorina Nowill lost her vision at the age of 17 in 1936. This did not stop her; to the contrary, it pushed her to take on a pioneering role in the education and integration of the visually impaired population in Brazil. She was responsible for bringing the first Braille press to the country in 1946, the same year she created the Foundation for Books for the Blind in Brazil, thus expanding the possibilities of access to reading and education for the visually impaired. In 1992, the Foundation was officially renamed The Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind. In addition to being a pioneer in the creation and management of government projects at national and international levels for the inclusion of the blind in the educational system, along with their subsequent integration into the labor market, Dorina was president of the World Council of the Blind, having delivered a speech along with others at the General Assembly of the UN in 1981 – the International Year of the Disabled Person. Dorina Nowill passed away in 2010 at age 91, leaving a vast legacy of improvements and a new vision and structure for the blind in Brazil and in the world.
Dorina – Looking at the World re-affirms the trajectory of this great pioneer of education and social inclusion of the visually impaired in Brazil and in the world. Its history reveals a journey of awareness and transformative action, both personally and in the social and political sphere.
